Plans for GW2 Beta--Server and Sign-Up Information
Posted by ceolstan on 25 April 2012 - 09:47 PM
Basin Plans for Guild Wars 2 Beta--Read how to sign up!!!

Anet has announced the first pre-purchase beta weekend event which will be held this weekend, April 27-29th.  In preparation for this, we are starting to plan how to organize the GW2 AB guild.  Read on for the details.

Servers and The Basin

The information ANet released in the days leading up to pre-purchase indicated that regardless of where you live, you can choose the server you want to play on for your account.  You need to change your server world at login.

The Basin will be playing on the following servers:
  • The Eternal Grove (primary)
  • Darkhaven (secondary)
  • Steamspur Mountains (tertiary)
  • Vasburg (final official server)
Ideally we would like to get as many ABers as we can on the same server to be able to play together.  However, we realize that some of the servers may become filled.  In that case, we encourage people to sign up on the secondary server.  When that gets full, move on down the list.  This way, we can concentrate our Basin population as much as possible.

Creating the Basin Guild

We have already made arrangements for the Basin guild to be created shortly upon launch.  Once you have logged in and created an account, sign up in the Basin Beta Guild Sign-Up thread.

If you didn't manage to get onto Eternal Grove, but are instead on Darkhaven, don't worry, we've got the guild and you covered. :)

We will invite you as soon as possible.

Charge!

Guild Wars 2 Pre-Purchase April 10
Posted by ceolstan on 13 March 2012 - 07:54 AM
If you haven't yet read on the various fan and news sites, Guild Wars 2 Pre-Purchases are official!

This is very exciting!

Players can opt to pre-purchase one of three different types of editions: digital, digital deluxe, and collector's.  All grant access to beta weekends.  After that, there are a variety of perks.

Needless to say, this is going to be extremely exciting!  Not only will we get a glimpse of the new game, but we also will have a 3 day head start!  This will be a great opportunity for us to build up some guild influence and get those "upgrades" that the pre-purchase announcement mentions.

Hope to see everyone in the betas!

Cheers!  :beer_mug: :beer_mug: :beer_mug: :beer_mug:

Wintersday Festival is Live!
Posted by ceolstan on 18 December 2011 - 08:33 AM
Wintersday 2011 has started!  Lion's Arch, Kamadan, and Eye of the North are decorated with festive trappings.  Once more, players can help little urchins for favor with Dwayna, or side with the Grentchies to curry favor with Grenth.  Returning favorites include the Snowball Fight, and this year's twist is the new Snowball Fight of the Gods, a PvP minigame.

For those working on gamer, party, and drunkard points, this is a terrific festival!  Collectors stand by with Spiked Eggnog, Snowman Summoners, Fruitcake, Wintergreen and Rainbow Candy Canes.

The festivities continue until January 2, with the Finale running in Lion's Arch from 12:01 am PST on Sunday, January 1st, 2012, and ending 12:01 am PST on Monday, January 2nd, 2012.  Kamadan will also have a Finale, but with a 15 minute delay.

Happy Wintersday!

Happy Sixth Anniversary!
Posted by ceolstan on 28 April 2011 - 02:29 PM
Today, April 28, 2011, marks the Sixth Anniversary of Guild Wars! Wow!

The in-game celebrations will start once the anniversary update has been released.  A preview of that update is now up on Massively, with the following details released:
  • Birthday tonics.
  • PvP changes based on "fluctuations" in the land as a result of the last plot to release Mad King Thorn.
  • Hard mode quests.
  • High resolution town textures.
  • Ability to see where your mutual friends are playing.

And of course here's a shout out to a great guild.  We were here before Guild Wars was released, and we're still here and active six years later.  It's been a great ride, and we look forward to enjoying this update as well as what the future holds for us with Guild Wars 2.

Congratulations to our Guild Wars Guru Tournament Team
Posted by ceolstan on 10 April 2011 - 07:09 AM
A big congratulations to our Guild Wars Guru Tournament team.  It's great to see AB playing GvG again, and it was super to see some renewed interest in this very exciting aspect of the game.

Here's Cooner's summary from the GvG Tournament organization thread:

View PostCoonerTheRed, on 09 April 2011 - 11:33 PM, said:

Well, I think we can claim a pretty decent success.  On the day, we went 3-2 in the Swiss Round, winning two games fairly handily, winning one in a nail-biter that ended in a Guild Lord kill at 27:55, and losing two, one of which we really should have won, and one of which we could have won but got a little psyched out.

In the single-elimination round, we simply got out-spiked by a team playing a bar almost identical to our own.  They finished 3rd overall, so no shame there.  Also, this team had Happy Feet (the tourney organizer and a great player) as their mentor, and one top player can definitely make a difference.

Our wins were over #12, 13, and 16, and our losses were to #3, 5, and 14 (with the 14 being the one we should have won except for poor leadership and not capitalizing on our kills).  We finished at #11 on the day.

I personally had a lot of fun, and it was a pleasure to play with this team.  It's been too long since we had any serious GvG, so this was great.  :beer_mug:

The team had a mix between some experienced players, some returning players, and some new PvP players.

Great job, everyone! :) :beer_mug: :beer_mug: :beer_mug:

Basin Team for Guild Wars Guru Tournament
Posted by ceolstan on 27 March 2011 - 07:12 AM
The Guild Wars Guru 2011 GvG Tournament is accepting team registrations, and we're happy that The Basin will have a team competing this year.  The tournament base team is out of AB4, aka Basin Amazons.  If you're in AB4, feel free to watch the games on Observe.  This past weekend, the team has started to pull together, with some very nice (+9) wins against strong opponents.  If you want to check out the discussions and builds, see the PvP forum for details.

We'll be competing in the Casual division.  This is a great fit for our group.  We have some people who are experienced GvG players, and some who are not.  We also have some players who played GvG several years ago, but who are now polishing the rust off their skills to learn what is a very new game (and new win conditions!).

We're proud of our team, and we wish them the very best in competition!

Basin Fund Drive 2010
Posted by ceolstan on 21 July 2010 - 06:21 PM
Folks, it's that time of year again when our Founder, TPJ, finds he needs to ask us to step up to the plate to help with operating costs.  Here is this year's message:

It's been 14 months since The Amazon Basin's last fund drive. Since anything over a year's worth of funds is considered a pretty big success, I'd say you folks did a pretty damn good job last time. For that, I thank each and every one of you. You keep this place running. You keep it ad-free. You keep it open.

But, we are running out of cash. We have enough to pay our server payment on July 25th, but not enough for the August payment. I hate bugging people about this type of stuff, but it's the nature of how we run things here. We've always been ad-free. Most everyone agrees that they'd rather put in a few dollars here and there than have to plaster advertisements in our home. I feel that decision has been the right one as it's kept us apart from the masses of other sites out there. We're unique in that respect, and proudly so.

Plenty of people aren't in any sort of financial shape to be sending off donations right now. I completely understand that. If you're one of those folks, I'm not asking you for help. I'm asking the person next to you that can afford to help a little. If you can't, you can't. But if you can, please help us keep this place afloat by heading over to our donation page and using the PayPal link. If you don't have a PayPal account or are an anti-online payment person, my address is on the same page. You can definitely snail mail me a check or whatever. Either way, you'll be helping The Basin out.

As always, Amazon.com purchases though our Amazon.com Associate Program link will help as well. A percentage of everything you buy after following that link to Amazon.com will end up in our bank account on a quarterly basis. It really does help over the course of a year.

And again, I thank you folks for making this place what it is.  --TPJ, Founder, The Amazon Basin

Guild Wars Fifth Anniversary
Posted by ceolstan on 29 April 2010 - 12:06 PM
Happy Birthday, Guild Wars!  The game has just turned 5 years old, and the celebrations in Tyria run from boardwalk games in Shing Jea to new birthday minipets to a whole boatload of information on the upcoming Guild Wars 2.  Guild Wars went against the subscription model, and Guild Wars 2 promises to continue in that same model, but adding more depth to the Guild Wars experience.  And of course, as one of the oldest guilds in Guild Wars, you can be sure that we at The Basin will be as involved in Guild Wars 2 as we have been in Guild Wars.

Please join with us in celebrating five great years of Guild Wars as we look forward to the future and Guild Wars 2!

Basin Server Going Down Soon for Maintenance
Posted by ceolstan on 21 January 2010 - 10:36 PM
TPJ has announced on the Community Boards here that the Basin Boards will be taken down within the next 24 hours or so.  Time is not yet determined.

Here is the full text of the announcement:

TPJ said:

Marty will be taking the Basin server down in the next day or so. The outage may last 2 or more days. The planned outage is to do a pretty large amount of updates on both Linux and the forum software.

Please pass the word so we can avoid panic when folks are unable to reach the boards.
Note that the planned outage may be for 2 days.  GvG folks may wish to consider a backup option for voice.
