Basin Fund Drive 2010
Posted by ceolstan on 21 July 2010 - 06:21 PM
Folks, it's that time of year again when our Founder, TPJ, finds he needs to ask us to step up to the plate to help with operating costs. Here is this year's message:

It's been 14 months since The Amazon Basin's last fund drive. Since anything over a year's worth of funds is considered a pretty big success, I'd say you folks did a pretty damn good job last time. For that, I thank each and every one of you. You keep this place running. You keep it ad-free. You keep it open.

But, we are running out of cash. We have enough to pay our server payment on July 25th, but not enough for the August payment. I hate bugging people about this type of stuff, but it's the nature of how we run things here. We've always been ad-free. Most everyone agrees that they'd rather put in a few dollars here and there than have to plaster advertisements in our home. I feel that decision has been the right one as it's kept us apart from the masses of other sites out there. We're unique in that respect, and proudly so.

Plenty of people aren't in any sort of financial shape to be sending off donations right now. I completely understand that. If you're one of those folks, I'm not asking you for help. I'm asking the person next to you that can afford to help a little. If you can't, you can't. But if you can, please help us keep this place afloat by heading over to our donation page and using the PayPal link. If you don't have a PayPal account or are an anti-online payment person, my address is on the same page. You can definitely snail mail me a check or whatever. Either way, you'll be helping The Basin out.

As always, Amazon.com purchases though our Amazon.com Associate Program link will help as well. A percentage of everything you buy after following that link to Amazon.com will end up in our bank account on a quarterly basis. It really does help over the course of a year.

And again, I thank you folks for making this place what it is. --TPJ, Founder, The Amazon Basin

Guild Wars Fifth Anniversary
Posted by ceolstan on 29 April 2010 - 12:06 PM
Happy Birthday, Guild Wars! The game has just turned 5 years old, and the celebrations in Tyria run from boardwalk games in Shing Jea to new birthday minipets to a whole boatload of information on the upcoming Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars went against the subscription model, and Guild Wars 2 promises to continue in that same model, but adding more depth to the Guild Wars experience. And of course, as one of the oldest guilds in Guild Wars, you can be sure that we at The Basin will be as involved in Guild Wars 2 as we have been in Guild Wars.

Please join with us in celebrating five great years of Guild Wars as we look forward to the future and Guild Wars 2!

Basin Server Going Down Soon for Maintenance
Posted by ceolstan on 21 January 2010 - 10:36 PM
TPJ has announced on the Community Boards here that the Basin Boards will be taken down within the next 24 hours or so. Time is not yet determined.

Here is the full text of the announcement:

TPJ said:

Marty will be taking the Basin server down in the next day or so. The outage may last 2 or more days. The planned outage is to do a pretty large amount of updates on both Linux and the forum software.

Please pass the word so we can avoid panic when folks are unable to reach the boards.

Note that the planned outage may be for 2 days. GvG folks may wish to consider a backup option for voice.

The Amazon Basin (AB2) Perma-Luxon
Posted by ceolstan on 12 June 2009 - 09:27 PM
We are currently piloting the concept of perma-Luxon and perma-Kurzick guilds within the Basin Alliance in order to accommodate title-seekers. We have just switched The Amazon Basin to the Luxon side of the game, which means that The Amazon Basin (AB2) will be part of the Basin Alliance when we're Luxon, and a free-standing Luxon guild when the overall Alliance swings to Kurzick.

Only players who wish to work toward Savior of the Luxons or Savior of the Kurzicks will be permitted to belong to these perma-guilds. Luxon players should sign up here if they wish to belong to the Luxon guild for purposes of pursuing a title. Kurzick player should sign up here if they plan to pursue the Kurzick titles.

We will pilot this for at least two weeks and gather feedback.

Basin Fund Drive 2009
Posted by ceolstan on 27 May 2009 - 01:56 PM
As many of you are aware, The Basin conducts fund drives as needed to collect the money needed to keep The Basin ad-free and running. Our last major drive was in 2007. For those of us able to donate, it's now time to add more to the Basin's coffers.

For the Main Forum thread, please see here. The text is reprinted below:

TPJ said:

Basin folk -

I come to you, defenses down, with the trust of a child.

The donations received from our fund drive in October of 2007 have all been spent. Unfortunately, The Basin is pretty much running on fumes. If any of you are in a position to lend a financial hand, I'm hoping you will help. It would be nice to receive enough to keep us up for another year as well as ensure a hassle-free ABCon.

The best way to help is by making a donation to The Basin by way of PayPal. You can do that on our Donation page. There are also links to subscription-type donations that are taken care of through PayPal.

Most of you know the drill by now, but if you don't, here's the skinny: The Basin operates solely on donations from people like you. We do not throw banner ads all over the place, nor are we part of Google's AdWords system. This place is run as it always has - advertising free. Your donations keep it that way. Our operating budget is used for things like our server at GoDaddy, the checking account, software, business filings, and taxes/fees. All said and done, we probably average about $160 a month in expenses. This fund drive is the primary way we generate funds to sustain ourselves here. But keep in mind, no one is required to donate. If you don't have the money, don't beat yourself up about it. No worries. We know that not everyone is in a financial position to offer help. But - there are those who can help. Those are the people we hope to reach with this message.

Thanks all.

Oh, and pass the word, will ya?

Basin going Kurzick for Double Kurzick/Luxon Reward Weekend
Posted by ceolstan on 21 May 2009 - 01:23 PM
After a brief, yet excellent discussion of what to do with our alliance over the Double Kurzick/Luxon Rewards Weekend, The Basin will be switching to Kurzick at or around 6:30 Eastern Daylight Time on Thursday, May 21. This will enable our majority players to work on their Kurzick titles.

For our Luxon title chasers, we will be keeping a Luxon guild available: the Dreadful Dead. If you wish to have an invite to the Dreadful Dead, please post here. The Dead will remain Luxon over the bonus weekend, after which it will rejoin the alliance.

Basin Amazons Places Third in GWEN Cup
Posted by ceolstan on 28 March 2009 - 08:10 PM
The Basin Amazons entered the GWEN Cup, a player-run GvG tournament restricted to using only those skills found in Pre-Searing. Our team fielded a ranger spike build.

We had a great time doing some theory craft and build testing. We placed third in the competition, winning a team prize of 200,000 gold.

Many thanks to Foxbat for his organizational efforts in bringing together a Basin team. Also, a round of applause for Bass69, CoonerTheRed, Justin L, DaMadMoo, Yobbo, Yugi, who helped fill out the player roster.

Cheers to the team!

Basin Hosts Canthan New Year Feasts
Posted by ceolstan on 02 February 2009 - 11:46 AM
This year marked the very first year that The Basin hosted feasts for the Canthan New Year celebration. With what started out as an announcement thread for the dates, the next thing that happened was a full-scale guild organization so that The Basin could sponsor the feasts in a district throughout the entire festival. As a result, The Basin set up a permanent catering house in International District 4, with Allton Brown (notice it's Allton Brown) as the chief sous chef providing the ingredients.

We're really proud of the way that so many people pulled together to make the 2009 Canthan New Year so memorable. And we're thankful to everyone for their efforts, whether farming for ingredients or volunteering to act as chefs.

Great job, Basin!!!!!

Basin Team Wins Hall of Heroes--And Holds It!!!
Posted by ceolstan on 25 January 2009 - 11:26 AM
Hearty congratulations to the late night group who took Basin Amazons (aka AB4 in our Alliance) to the Hall of Heroes! This is a first for our guild. For a long time, we've had Basiners active in Heroes Ascent, but not as a guild activity. However, for some time, we've had a weekly HA group game. We've come close--O so close!--but never won the Hall of Heroes.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, January 25, 2009, that all changed. The Basin Amazons took and held the Hall of Heroes. A very hearty congratulations to all who participated!

For more reading, see this thread.

Go team!

Congratulations to our own Firedove!
Posted by ceolstan on 05 January 2009 - 08:07 PM
Congratulations to our very own Firedove, who found a Polar Bear Minipet while playing with a group of Basiners. Her lovely account of the story is in the best of Basin traditions, where the rare item is dwarfed by the fine company of friends.

We're thrilled that one of our own managed to have a Wintersday pet drop. We're even more pleased that this was an experience that occurred in our community of friends playing games. :)

Posted by ceolstan on 22 September 2008 - 04:31 PM
Ziss and Brilene, from lagwar.com. a site dedicated to MMOs and the people who play them, just spotlight on The Basin's Guild Wars Guild. You can find the podcast and write-up in their Guild and Clan Spotlight.

We want to thank lagwar.com for this honor. It was a pleasure to talk with both Ziss and Brilene. Their enthusiasm for gaming and for talking with the players is wonderful, and their bold venture into this kind of journalism is commendable!

Also, many thanks to those of you who sent in your screenshots. Your pictures help show the multifaceted nature of our guild's activities. The strength of the guild lies in its people. We're so fortunate to have so many talented and enthusiastic people!

Basin Breaks One Million Kurzick Faction
Posted by ceolstan on 28 July 2008 - 09:06 AM
It's our great pleasure to announce that The Basin Alliance now has over one million Kurzick faction! This is an important milestone on our Basin Owns a Town Bonanza.

Thanks to everyone who's been donating Kurzick faction. We had a lot of activity with Fast Faction Farming and Alliance Battles. And be sure that if you're doing Alliance Battles you submit your team's scores to the Alliance Battle Contest.

About a week ago, The Basin Alliance had a scant 200,000 Kurzick faction; today it's over 1,000,000. This is an incredible gain!

Go Team!!!!!
