- Ladder is a game mode on the Realms in which characters compete in a race to level 99. Prior to the release of patch 1.10 on 28 October 2003, all characters were automatically ranked on a Ladder according to experience level (although there were separate Ladder rankings for different Realms, for Hardcore characters on each Realm, and later for Classic and Expansion characters on each Realm). However, with the release of 1.10, Ladder also became a separate game mode.
- Ladder characters are created on the Realms by checking the Ladder Character box when creating a new character. Ladder characters can only create and join Ladder games, which non-Ladder characters cannot join. Once a Ladder character has been created, it cannot be converted to a non-Ladder character until the end of the Ladder season.
- Ladder rank of a dead Hardcore character will be preserved as long as it is not deleted. Names of dead characters can be recycled by deleting them and creating new characters with the same name (although any Ladder rank of the dead character will be lost). If a player does not log in with a dead Hardcore character at least once every 90 days, it expires and can then be deleted by anybody else creating a new character with the same name.
- Deleted Ladder characters are removed from the Ladder rankings.
