Of the Barbarian people, the Tribe of Thunder was the first to draw upon the primal forces of the weather. Tornadoes would ravage their plains as summer turned to the harvest season. The shaman of the tribe would interpret the tornadoes as an omen of evil during times of peace, and as a harbinger of great victory during wartime. Observing the strength of the whirlwind, these Barbarians learned to emulate the swirling melange of the cyclone in their attacks. As time went on and the tribes intermingled, the ability to attack in the manner of the whirlwind was passed down to all of the Barbarian people.
Detail
Overlay while active.
- Best used by not selecting specific target(s) but targeting point beyond so that attacks are made as user moves there. Selecting a target within melee range will only result in single Attack (without Whirlwind's +% Attack Rating and +% Damage).
- Cannot switch weapons or access inventory, potions or other skills while in whirlwind.
- No Chance to Cast of any kind is applied when in whirlwind.
- Whirlwind cannot be interrupted by blocking, casting, hit recovery, being knocked back or stunned once first attack has been executed.
- When moving to target, periodically searches for target(s) within 3 1/3 yard radius. [1] [2] However, even if target is within radius it can only be attacked if it is also within melee range.
Although Barbarian has maximum range 7 using any other attack with range adder 4 polearm or spear on size 3 target, range 5 is all that's required to hit any target within Whirlwind's search radius (and range 4 can be quite sufficient).
- Consequently, area within radius in which a target can be attacked varies depending on range adder and target size:

- While range adder 4 weapon can always attack any target within radius, since vast majority of targets are size 2-3 this is normally true for range adder 3 as well, and range adder 2 (maximum for one-handed weapon) attacking size 3 (against size 2, ~85% of area within radius can still be attacked when occupied).
- Target checks are always performed in the fourth and eighth frames of the whirlwind animation. Beyond that, check frequency is determined solely by Weapon Speed Modifier and weapon Increased Attack Speed: all other attack rate modifiers do not affect hit check frequency. EIAS = weapon IAS - WSM

- Two-handed swords use one-handed breakpoints regardless of number of hands used to equip.
- Weapon can only attack one target within radius and range at each check.
- Movement speed modifiers still apply while in Whirlwind.
- If weapon is reduced to 0 durability or user is reduced to 0 life, weapon will not break and user won't die until whirlwind ends.
- When no skill points have been invested in Whirlwind and it has been acquired from a skill bonus or oskill, if user levels up while using Whirlwind they will be unable to move or attack but remain in whirlwind. Only way to escape is to save and exit game.
Two weapons
Details of Whirlwind with two weapons need to be clarified.
- With two weapons, targeting check is made for primary weapon in fourth frame and for both weapons at every targeting check thereafter. If more than two targets can be targeted then each weapon will attack a separate target, otherwise both will attack single target. While target is in range, one weapon is constantly used to calculate the next hit-check frame. When no target is in range, alternates between the two weapons to calculate the next hit-check frame.
