Enhanced Defense on any of the following item types increases their own defense values by a percentage:

Armor
Helm Circlet Pelt Primal helm	Body armor Belt Boots Gloves	Shield Auric shield Shrunken head

If any of these items spawns with Enhanced Defense, then its base defense is set to its maximum value + 1 (added before any ethereal bonus) before the percentage bonus is applied. However, if an item is upgraded from Normal to Exceptional or Exceptional to Elite using the Horadric Cube then its base defense value is selected randomly again.

For example, a Grim Helm has (60-125) defense while Vampire Gaze Grim Helm has 100% Enhanced Defense (ED), so this is applied to 126 (125+1) defense to result in 252 defense (if it is ethereal, then it is applied to 189 ( [(125+1)*1.5] ) defense to result in 378 defense). However, if it is upgraded to a Bone Visage, 100% ED is applied to (100-157) defense ( (150-235) if ethereal) to result in (200-314) defense ( (300-470) if ethereal).
When Enhanced Defense spawns on any other item which does not have a defense value of its own, then this is treated as a +% Defense bonus and added to other bonuses of that type. To avoid confusion, these items are not listed on this page.
