One of the primary tradeskills, Inscription is a new profession introduced with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Inscriptionists create items, called glyphs, which can be used to augment a character's powers. These glyphs are added to a special tab on the character's Talent interface window. Each character can have three major glyphs and three minor glyphs at level 80. Inscriptionists can also make scrolls that can be imbued with an enchantment spell, allowing the enchantment to be applied by a character that doesn't have the Enchanting skill. In addition, Inscription allows the creation of stat-enhancing scrolls, and books of magic.

Inscription is unusual because a character cannot just learn all the recipes of their trade through class trainers and item drops, but also has an skill called "Minor Inscription Research", which has a 20 hour cooldown. This means that it will take a minimum of 1200 hours (or 50 days) to learn every minor glyph.

Inscriptionists use herbs to create the basic ingredients for their wares. A stack of five herbs is milled to create a pigment.
